How we build a driveway
Short clips from one gated driveway job, from the first dig to the finished surface.
Dig out
A mini digger takes off the old surface and soft soil down to firm ground. The depth depends on the ground and on what will drive over it.
Lay the sub-base
Crushed stone goes in and is graded with a slight fall, so rainwater runs away from the house.
Compact it
A roller compacts the stone in layers. A well compacted base is what keeps a drive flat and stops it sinking.
Surface and finish
The surface goes on over the base. On this job it is tarmac, with edging along the border and a clean line at the gates.
