Why drainage comes first

Most driveway and patio problems are water problems. We look at where rainwater will go before we set any levels. The aim is to keep it on your land, away from the house, and moving to a drain, soakaway or planted area.

For front gardens, the rules in England favour permeable surfaces, or drainage to a lawn or border. Our planning guide explains how.
